Amazon has unveiled a cutting-edge 2.8 million-square-foot robotic fulfillment center in Charlton, Massachusetts, marking its largest investment in the state to date. The four-story facility, which officially opened on June 3, integrates hundreds of robots capable of lifting up to 1,500 pounds each, supporting a workforce of over 1,000 employees in managing tens of thousands of daily orders.
Housing approximately 32 million items, the center stocks a diverse range of products including books, electronics, toys, and household goods. The $300 million project began construction in March 2022, with operations commencing in November 2024, reflecting Amazon’s ongoing commitment to enhancing logistics capabilities.
Since 2010, Amazon has invested $23 billion in Massachusetts, establishing eight fulfillment and sortation centers, 17 delivery stations, and one Prime Now fulfillment hub, further solidifying its presence in the region.
Robotic technology plays a vital role in Amazon’s operational strategy, aimed at minimizing manual labor and increasing efficiency. Earlier this year, the company introduced several new robots designed for its U.S. logistics network, including Tipper, which moves packages from carts to conveyor belts, and Vulcan, a robotic picker equipped with tactile sensing capabilities.
Amazon’s robotics expansion continues with ongoing construction of additional facilities, such as a new center in Virginia and another slated to open in North Carolina in 2026, underscoring the company’s push to automate and scale its fulfillment operations nationwide.
