Etsy Now Allows Sellers to Offer Tailoring and Repair Services

Etsy has updated its policies to permit sellers to offer modification services—such as tailoring, repairing, or restoring buyers’ existing items—a significant shift after 15 years of prohibiting such offerings. This policy change was first uncovered by online seller consultant Cindy Baldassi, who noted the move as surprising and cautioned that there might be complexities involved.

According to Etsy’s updated Services policy, allowed modification services now include tailoring, jewelry alterations, photographic retouching, and item repairs. However, Etsy also warns buyers that they assume risk when sending items for modification, as the platform’s Purchase Protection Program covers only the amount paid for the order, not the original item’s full value.

Despite the policy change, Etsy currently lacks the infrastructure to fully support sellers offering these services, and Baldassi advises sellers to await official announcements and clarifications from Etsy before proceeding.

Etsy confirmed it recently updated its Creativity Standards and added detailed Help Center content, but has not publicly elaborated on the modifications to its Services house rules. The company shared an internal communication with sellers clarifying these adjustments, though access remains limited.

Sellers and buyers are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as Etsy rolls out support for these new service offerings.
